What to expect

Your initial consultation will last around 1.5-2 hours (or up to 2-2.5 hours for a facial acupuncture) and during this time I will take a full medical and family history. This involves asking questions about your symptoms, as well as such things as your sleeping pattern, your appetite and digestion, and your emotional well being. I will also look at your tongue and feel your pulse on both wrists. If you are suffering from pain, I will examine the areas of pain and check your range of movement.

You might feel that some questions appear unrelated to your condition but the information you give helps me to form a more complete picture of your health. As a result, you may find that several things get better together alongside your main complaint.

Following the initial appointment, I will work on a diagnosis and a treatment plan. I will then discuss this at your next appointment and how long you are likely to need treatment for, and how often.

What should you wear?

It isn’t necessary to wear any special clothing, but loose clothing that you can roll up to knees/elbows is very helpful. I often use acupuncture points on the forearm and lower leg, in which case there’s no need to take any clothes off, except for shoes and socks. If I need to use other points on the back or abdomen, you will be in a private consulting room with blankets or a gown to protect your privacy if necessary.

Does it Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are incredibly fine, almost as fine as a strand of hair and are solid. Acupuncture doesn’t normally hurt, and the sensation is often a dull ache, buzzing or pulling sensation. The needles I use are single-use, sterile highest-quality acupuncture needles. Some needles will be left in for up to 20 minutes during the treatment and others will be in and out.

Please note: It’s important not to receive acupuncture on an empty stomach as this can make you feel a bit light-headed, or after consuming alcohol or taking recreational drugs.
During your acupuncture treatment or facial acupuncture treatment, other Chinese Medicine techniques may be used when appropriate to complement the treatment. These will be discussed with you during the consultation.

Techniques that may be used during your treatment

Cupping

Gua Sha

Moxibustion (Moxa)

Electro acupuncture
