Women’s Health

Do you have irregular, absent or heavy periods?

Have you suffered with painful periods and Pre-menstrual tension?

Do you suffer from or suspect you may have Endometriosis or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?

Are you struggling with the menopause or think you might be peri-menopausal?

The menstrual cycle and period issues

In today’s society it’s common for many women to “put up with” gynaecological issues and think that pain and dysfunction (both physical and emotional) are normal, but they are not.

Many of the issues women face are due to imbalance, which often starts as hormonal and then can progress to other physical signs and symptoms.

Conventional medicine has a tendency to medicate women, for example with the pill, drugs that alter the menstrual cycle or hormone replacement therapy during the menopause.

Chinese medicine sees our teenage years, our 20’s and the menopause as pivotal times in our development and long-term health and that we need to nourish and nurture during this time, not suppress and alter them.
When I first started acupuncture, my cycles ranged from 25-35 days and were often very heavy and painful. I always felt terrible before them, with mood swings and headaches and then exhausted afterwards. After a course of acupuncture treatment and then coming 1-2 times a month, my periods are now pretty regular, not heavy or painful and I don’t feel constantly exhausted. I would highly recommend trying acupuncture as it has really helped me. Thank you Rachal AS

Peri-Menopause & Menopause

The menopause, defined as the end of the last menstrual period, normally occurs in our 50’s, but for some women it can be much earlier than this. The change in hormone levels during the perimenopause (transition into menopause) and menopause, particularly the decline in oestrogen, can cause acute menopausal symptoms:

  • anxiety and depression
  • body aches
  • hot flushes
  • irritability
  • insomnia
  • loss of libido
  • memory loss
  • night sweats
  • vaginal dryness

Menopausal symptoms on average can last up to 4 years but, in around 10% of women, they last longer than 12 years.

For many women the menopause conjures up the fear of hot flushes, mood swings and ageing. But it doesn’t have to be like that. I regularly see clients suffering with menopausal symptoms and I see some really good results.
I decided to give acupuncture a try after experiencing terrible night sweats, insomnia and loss of libido during my menopause. Gradually over time my night sweats reduced, and my sleep became less unsettled and I started to feel human again. I also got my sex drive back. I can’t thank Rachal enough, she has been a life saver over the last year and I now feel like myself for the first time in years. JT

Why choose acupuncture?

A course of acupuncture treatments may be all that is needed to help with:

• Irregular or absent periods
• Heavy or scanty periods
• Painful periods including breast pain and headaches related to the menstrual cycle
• Pre-menstrual tension
• Endometriosis and PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome)
• Thyroid disorders
• Perimenopause and Menopause

The research

Research has shown that acupuncture may be able to help with this range of women’s health issues by:

• Regulating the menstrual cycle and hormones

• Improving blood circulation to the pelvic organs, including the ovaries and uterus, which may improve the thickness of the endometrial lining

• Helping to support ovulation dysfunction in some women

Reduce pain by stimulating the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain, which leads to the release of endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers), as well as helping to reduce inflammation.

• Stimulation of certain acupuncture points has also been shown to affect areas of the brain that are known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as promoting relaxation and deactivating the ‘analytical’ brain, which is responsible for anxiety.

I have been seeing Rachal regularly for the last couple of years. I have a chronic thyroid disorder which I was diagnosed with after the birth of my first son. Having tried everything that Western medicine has to offer, but feeling no better, I turned to Traditional Chinese Acupuncture… and I have never looked back. Not only does Rachal help to keep my thyroid symptoms under control, she has helped me with many other areas from sports injuries and sinus problems to neck tension and insomnia. Rachal is the consummate professional who always makes me feel very comfortable even when discussing the most personal of things! She is able to get to the root of my issues quickly and always prioritises the right things during treatment. Most of all I trust her completely. She’s gentle when she needs to be and straight talking when she needs to be – that, to me, makes for the perfect health professional Sue

My Experience

I regularly see clients suffering with menstrual problems, endometriosis, PCOS, ovulation dysfunction, Perimenopause and the Menopause and I see some really good results. This is something which I get a great amount of job satisfaction from when I help women of all ages in my clinic every week. Having suffered with irregular cycles, PCOS and then night sweats and insomnia during IVF treatment I know first-hand what it’s like to be taken over by your body and its hormones. For me regular acupuncture has been one of the only things which have helped me to get back to regular cycles, good sleep and feeling human again.
