Moxibustion is an externally applied TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) treatment using a Chinese herb called Moxa (Artemisia argyi), commonly known as ‘Mugwort’. For external use Moxa is compressed and rolled into a cigar-shaped herbal stick, cone or a smokeless charcoaled preparation. Moxa cones or sticks are then lit and held on or over acupuncture points. The radiant heat produced has the effect of stimulating the point, increasing blood flow to the area (increasing circulation), which in turn helps reduce pain and inflammation and improves joint mobility.
Direct moxibustion is more commonly used for specific areas needing treatment. It is particularly beneficial in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions such as bad backs, joints problems and improving joint mobility, loss of sensation, osteoarthritis, arthritis, reduction of pain, and gynaecological conditions such as infertility and irregular and painful periods.
Moxibustion can be used for breech presentation of the baby during pregnancy, please go to the pregnancy and childbirth page to find out more.
