Electroacupuncture is particularly effective for helping with chronic musculoskeletal problems such as osteoarthritis of the hip and knee or frozen shoulder, as well as helping to break down scar tissue.
During the treatment a small current is passed through the needles to stimulate the muscles, nerves, and circulation. Circulation is an important part of the healing process, and promotes delivery of nutrients to the traumatised tissue whilst removing any inflammatory chemicals that may be irritating the tissues structures (Walsh & Berry, 2010).
Electroacupucture also has the same analgesic effect (reduces pain) as prescribed opioids (such as morphine) (Walsh & Berry 2010). The process is quite painless, and the sensation feels a little like pins and needles or a prickling sensation.
